Experience Local and Global History
The Treasure Coast’s cities are full of family-friendly ways to squeeze in a history lesson. From the National Navy Seal Museum in Fort Pierce to the McLarty Treasure Museum in Vero Beach, institutions up and down the Treasure Coast offer residents a chance to explore and honor this region’s history while also experiencing culture from around the world.
For example, the Stuart Heritage Museum’s exhibits, found in the old “Stuart Feed Store,” feature everything from authentic clothing, dolls and tools from the Seminole people to vintage photography from the city’s pineapple production days, preserving the city’s fascinating local history for the next generation.
While the Vero Beach Museum of Art gives residents the chance to experience art history on a uniquely global scale. Featuring five art galleries, two sculpture parks, an auditorium, a great hall and an art library, this is one of the largest cultural facilities of its kind on the Treasure Coast. And, offering lectures, seminars, and an art school, this institution is a regional center for the appreciation and teaching of the arts.
Tales to be Told
There is no shortage of live entertainment on the Treasure Coast — from the Sunrise Theatre — an events venue that hosts over 100 performances per year, featuring acts from America’s rising comics to Grammy-winning artists— to the Vero Beach Opera, a 35-year-old Treasure Coast institution. And, the Lyric Theatre which, built in 1925 as a silent movie house, now hosts some of the region’s most exciting performers as well as a discovery series for young adults.
This region’s local companies also bring important pieces of theatre to life throughout the region. In Fort Pierce, the Pineapple Playhouse provides a series slew of main-stage and young-adult performances throughout the year; in Vero Beach, the United Ballet Academy performs classics such as the Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake; and, in Stuart, the Barn Theatre, a volunteer-based performing arts theatre, put’s on multiple shows annually and has done so for over 50 years.
Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach is a non-profit, professional producing theatre featuring Broadway musicals and plays. The Theatre also offers children’s programs, a lecture series, weekend comedy shows and live music.
The Vero Beach Theatre Guild, the area’s only community theatre, has delighted audiences with nationally recognized plays since 1958.
